Promising practices towards systemic interventions for student success
This year's conference builds on the highly successful inaugural conference in May 2015 and will feature a number of international speakers as well as key role players,including students, in the field from South Africa. While the work of the five Siyaphumelela grantees will be profiled, we are keen to hear of promising practices from a cross-section of universities in South Africa.

From 23 to 26 February 2016 a South African delegation, sponsored by the Kresge Foundation, participated in DREAM 2016, the Achieving the Dream’s Annual Institute on Student Success, in Atlanta (USA).
“Started in 2004 by a group of founding partners and national and regional philanthropic investors, Achieving the Dream was revolutionary at that moment, catalysing a national conversation around student success and completion.
Equality - Equity
"Every system is perfectly designed to get the results it gets" (Paul Batalden) gave the delegates - including 25 South Africans attendees - of the Achieving the Dream conference opportunity to pause for reflection. The conference took place during a week of protest at several South African higher education institutions which were to some extent a continuation of the #FeesMustFall campaign.
The development of the UP Career App·tizer was one of the Kresge projects of the University of Pretoria in 2015. The Career App·tizer is a career exploration tool aimed at high school learners and first year students. As the name suggests it aims to get high school learners to start exploring different courses and careers offered by the University of Pretoria.

Jun 02, 2016. Although 68.5% of the students who were enrolled at higher education institutions were black‚ proportionally this group was under-represented, according to StatsSA from the findings from the General Household survey 2015.
- Using Data to improve Student Outcomes: Learning form Leading Colleges
May 23, 2016. A guide, produced by the Education trust, to inform university leaders and others steeped in efforts to raise graduation rates on their campuses. It highlights leading universities that have drastically improved student success by consistently reviewing and using their own data to launch campus-wide initiatives, focus the entire college community on student success, and remove stubborn obstacles that impede large numbers of low-income students and students of color from graduating college with a degree in hand.
